The Fisheries Sub-Department of Tra Vinh province has announced that the province usually begins stocking giant river prawn in fresh water areas from early May and focuses most on stocking in July in brackish water areas. In the past five years, the entire province has averaged around 2,000 hectares of giant river prawn farming each year, with approximately 1,500 hectares of giant river prawn raised in brackish water areas. Various production models have been implemented, including organic rice - giant river prawn, one crop of shrimp per year, shrimp-fish, and specialized giant river prawn cultivation.

For several years, Long Hoa commune in Chau Thanh district has implemented organic rice - giant river prawn production or specialized giant river prawn farming on nearly 700 hectares of land. In the 2022 season, most shrimp farmers made high profits due to stable market prices for giant river prawn, ranging from 230,000 to 250,000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram for sizes 7-10 shrimp per kilogram, 200,000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram for sizes 11-14 shrimp per kilogram, and 160,000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram for sizes 15-17 shrimp per kilogram. On average, the rice-giant river prawn model with 1 hectare of land yields shrimp harvests ranging from 350 to 400 kilograms per hectare per crop. With current market prices for giant river prawn, farmers can earn a net income of approximately 70 million Vietnamese dong per hectare, not including income from organic rice.

According to the plan, in 2023, the province will produce an additional 15 million giant freshwater shrimp breeds

It is worth noting that the production model of one rice crop followed by one giant river prawn crop or one shrimp (sú) crop followed by one giant river prawn crop is being promoted by the provincial agriculture sector in brackish water areas as an alternative to producing two rice crops per year or specializing in raising shrimp (sú) and white-legged shrimp with two crops per year. These models face many risks related to saltwater intrusion and disease outbreaks during environmental changes. The one rice crop - one giant river prawn crop or one monodon crop - one giant river prawn crop model is produced using clean methods, and the products are sold at higher prices, ensuring sustainable production and profitability for farmers.

Currently, Tra Vinh has 6 facilities producing all-male giant river prawn with an annual output of approximately 35 million postlarvae. However, this only meets about 25% of the province's demand for giant river prawn seedlings, and the rest must be imported from neighboring provinces such as Can Tho, Hau Giang, Dong Thap, Bac Lieu, and Ca Mau.

The shrimp-rice model brings high economic efficiency

The provincial agriculture sector has plans to support local seedling farms in expanding the production of all-male giant river prawn seedlings. According to the plan, in 2023, the province will produce an additional 15 million all-male giant river prawn seedlings to contribute to meeting the needs of farmers in the province for shrimp farming.
